BEIJING,Feb.22(Xinhua)--Chineseresearchershavesynthesizedtwonewnucleusisotopesthatcontain84neutronsand82neutrons,accordingtoarecentresearcharticlepublishedinthejournalPhysicalReviewLetters.Thenucleusiscomposedofprotonsandneutrons.Differentnumbersofprotonsandneutronsmakeupnucleiwithdifferentpropertieswhichwerecallednucleusisotopesbyscientists.Thesynthesisandstudyofnewnucleusisotopesareofgreatsignificanceforunderstandingboththestructureofmatterandtheevolutionofthecelestialenvironment.Previousexperimentsonproton-richnucleithatcontainaround126neutronsshowedthatahigherprotonnumbereventuallyrendersthenucleusunstable.Toseeifthesamebehavioroccursfornucleithatcontainaround82neutrons,theresearchersfromtheInstituteofModernPhysics,ChineseAcademyofSciences,studiedtheosmium-160.Theysynthesizedosmium-160andwolframium-156andfoundthattheosmium-160contains84neutronsand76protons,moreprotonsthananyother84-neutronnucleus.Thestudyillustratestheevolutionofaneutronshellwith82neutronsontheneutron-deficientsideofthenucleusisotopes.
